Do We Need Insurances?

by Jack Wogan

In a world without perils and exclusively with predictable acts, we would be practically unexposed and, as such, in no need of insurances. But the fact is that both as persons and as a species we are exposed to the bad intentions of the others or to harmful natural phenomena.

This is the reason why insurances are a must for us. If, for instance, you are the only one supporting your family, with a life insurance, you would know at least that in case of fatality, your family will be protected. In the same manner, you may consider insuring your job; if you are a cosmetic surgeon, for example, it is more possible to do something wrongly than to die out of the blue. But with professional indemnity insurance, you do not need to worry that malpractice will put an end to your career and ruin you financially. After all, no matter how professional we are, mistakes can be always done and third parties can be always injured or claim to have been so.

Further, there are other insurances protecting us against damages provoked by nature, such as earthquakes, floods, tornadoes or hurricanes. It would be better that these kind of circumstances find us prepared, with our properties fully covered, whether we speak about our homes, offices or businesses. You don't want to lose both your accommodation and your living in a few seconds, do you?

And even if it is not usual to witness such events in your region, with the climate change affecting weather patterns to such an extent these days, we might as well insure our estate against floods, if there is any water nearby. In any case, insurances were devised for the emergence of calamities, whatever their scale or origin.

It is in fact irrelevant to you if a catastrophe shattering your business headquarters was due to an atypical earthquake or just a gas leak, if the result is as damaging. And if you are a financial institution, for instance, it is irrelevant to you whether the money on the premises burned in a fire or was stolen by armed robbers. You insure what you possess and may disappear, notwithstanding the way in which it may or the probability of the said disappearance.
