Finding Good Bike Insurance

by James Halliday

Everyone has a different opinion on what is a good insurance quote. For some it is just about price, for others what is covered by the policy is more important. Regardless of what you want out of your insurance policy, by following a few simple steps you can achieve the cover you want at a reasonable price.

Before they start looking for your insurance policy write down what you want out of the policy. If you want, a low excess and want your no claims bonus to be protected note this down on your list. In addition, list your address, the model of your bike, its engine size, age and your age. Save it on your computer and print yourself a copy off. That way you will be able to quickly send your details via e-mail or fax to companies or brokers when you want to get quotes.

Make sure that the policies you ask for quotes on include roadside assistance. Should you breakdown far from you may need a hotel room, so make sure that it covers this cost too. If you plan to take your bike abroad, ensure that you are covered for the countries that you are likely to ride through. Make sure that you have good coverage for medical costs, if you have an accident when abroad having cover for medical treatment can be important. Regular travel insurance may not cover you in the case of an accident on a bike. Some travel insurance companies consider riding a motorbike a dangerous pastime, so do not cover travellers for accidents involving riding a motorbike. It is similar to the exceptions made on most travel insurance policies for accidents whilst skiing or bungee jumping.

When you have received back several quotes, sit down and compare them. Take the cheapest quote and ask other companies to match or beat that quote. The insurance business is very competitive, even for motorbikes, so most companies will happily beat a competitor's quote. However, make sure that the better price does not change your terms and conditions. Some companies offer a cheaper premium, but reduce your cover to do so, something they do not always make clear.

When you have settled on a quote, before you commit to the policy double check to make sure that everything you need is covered and to the right level. You will need to read the small print thoroughly to do this, it is boring but well worth the effort.
