What To Look For With A Pet Insurance Comparison

by Coleen Smith

Pet owners are cognizant of everything that goes on with their furry friends. Many pets have nothing but the very best food, clothing, toys, beds, pools, collars, etc. Some dog and cat owners pamper their pets more than they do themselves! Whether you're an indulgent pet owner or a sensible one, everybody agrees that a pet's medical needs must be met. Just like any other member of the family, routine health checks, major diseases and medical emergencies should be covered.. Most dog and cat owners do not plan for veterinary charges before it become necessary. They simply pay the doctor bill out of pocket when their dog or cat needs everyday or emergency veterinary treatment. Pet insurance is a very good choice to be sure that pets' medical needs are covered.

Unlike insurance for people, pets can see any licensed in your state veterinarian. There are no concerns about whether or not a doctor falls under your medical plan. Therefore that your pet is insured for routine, preventative and emergency care as outlined in the pet health insurance policy, as long as the vet is licensed.

It's expensive to go the the veterinarian's office, whether for regular checkups or treatment for injuries or illness. Dogs and cats, and other animals for that matter, sometimes get into trouble. They may sneak out and get hit by a car, they might eat something that they shouldn't, and all too often they contract illnesses from minor bacterial infections to various types of cancer. You can get part or all of their medical treatment paid for if you select the right pet insurance for your pet's needs.

If your pet is one of those who is inherently disposed to certain conditions, it's a very good idea to find a policy that covers hereditary illnesses. Hereditary illnesses and preexisting conditions are not the same thing. Almost all policies exclude preexisting conditions. The only solution to this is to buy the medical insurance policy before your pet has a problem.

Be sure to look at more than just the monthly premium when researching health insurance. You also need to make sure that the policy offers sufficient coverage for your needs. Many companies offer a discount for more than one family pet covered under one policy. Don't just buy a policy from the first company you find, even if the premium and coverage look good. You will learn a lot about what's available in the process of getting quotes. In order to get a good price on a policy that will meet your pet's needs, you should get at least three quotes from reputable companies.

If something should happen and your pet needs to go to the veterinarian, there is usually a deductible that you will need to pay. Making sure that your family friend is taken care of is well worth the deductible, but if you're concerned about it, make sure to compare deductibles on different pet insurance quotes.

Not all coverage is created equal. Some pet insurance only covers catastrophic situations. This means a pet may be covered should they require hospitalization, but if they are to be spayed or neutered, this would be an out of pocket expense. Since medical costs can come as a surprise, money often become an issue for pet owners. For some it can mean the difference between choosing to fight the good fight or having an animal put to sleep.

There are also plenty of policies that will cover annual physicals and dental cleanings in addition to injuries and illnesses. Preventative care, such as vaccines and heart worm medication, are included in some policies as well. This is a great way to maintain the overall health of a four legged friend. Policies that cover more often come with higher premiums, but they're well worth it.

Make sure you compare the coverages and the premiums on several pet medical insurance policies before making a decision. Nothing could be worse than having an unexpected accident and finding out it is not covered.
