For the four wheel drive carry all, it burst out of the cool, dark forest and emerged into the bright coastal sunlight after rocking down the rotted jungle track. It was the Daintree rain forest that was one of the great natural wonders of the world we left behind only to face another one 10 miles offshore in the Great Barrier Reef. When there are two wonders side by side then you are probably in one of the least developed regions along Australia's tropical northeast coast, northern Queensland.
Here is where one of the oldest rain forests in the world can be found. The reef that stretches north and south along 1,250 miles of shore swings closest to land in this part of the northern coast. Visitors have easy access to the rainforest and the reef. In order to see 1,200 species of tropical reef fish or the 350 types of spectacularly colorful living coral that make up the reef, you can dive, watch from an underwater observatory, or even from a submersible craft with glass sides.
Jumping off was done in Cairns which was the gateway to Australia's Marlin Coast, it has the charm of a British colonial outpost and is a small tropical city of 85,000. The 100 year old Cairns Kuranda Railway that we rode during our out of town trip twists 21 miles up and through rain forests, gorges, and mountains to the village of Kuranda. Following our return to Cairns was a drive north along the Marlin Coast and inland toward the rain forest lasting 90 minutes.
13 of the 19 families of ancient plant life still found on Earth are contained in the nearby rain forest. Dating back to 130 million years are some of these. Most roads through the forest are old rutted dirt tracks, originally built for logging and passable only by four wheel drive vehicles. You can have a more leisurely look at the rain forest through the pull offs with one that opens on to an hour's easy stroll along a well marked trail.
One tour service offers environmentally sensitive into the rain forest which comes with a boat ride down the Daintree River and starts from Silky Oaks. We drove a short drive from Silky Oaks to one of the major gateways to the Great Barrier Reef which is the old gold rush village of Port Douglas. Available for scuba divers are charter boats, available for skimmers were sailboats, and atop the reef there were permanent platforms groups of people were ferried to via a fleet of twin hulled jet catamarans.

Behind a waterfall is one of the private grottoes in its swimming pool area and in the local hotel where we stayed in the locals frequented their open air coffee shop. It was outside downtown Port Douglas where the famous Four Mile Beach can be found and it is where beautiful stretches of palm fringed white sand curve along the ocean.
